| Tutoring program begins Monday Posted: 07 Sep 2010 11:29 PM PDT Full Committed Ministry, through its Community Outreach Program, is beginning a tutoring program Sept. 6. Ten children will be selected for each of the four categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grades; 5th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades. Class times and days vary, depending on the grade of the student. Fridays are set aside for extra help, absentees and special testing. "Because our aim is to mentor the leaders of tomorrow the criteria for selection of the children will be left to the discretion of the staff," program director Tina Ratliff Boley said. "The children must be manageable, willing to learn and willing to excel."We prefer students whose parents take an active interest in their child's education." There is a minimal fee for the tutoring to cover the cost of supplies and necessities, Boley said. Space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, call Boley at 750-1378. | $15K Secured for Tutoring Plan Posted: 07 Sep 2010 09:37 PM PDT GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Grand Junction Forum is hammering out the details of its new tutoring program with District 51 schools--and volunteers are starting to jump on board. The idea behind the program is that a better level of education ultimately leads to a better quality of life and, in turn, a better community. So the forum is recruiting 500 volunteer tutors to spend an hour a week with a student that's falling behind."Everybody knows in order to have a viable community, you've got to have a very strong education system," says GJ Forum chairman John Hopkins. "The school district is doing a great job, but if we're going to drive it to a world class education system, it really is going to take a rally by the community to make that work."Parents we spoke with are behind the idea."There is so much learning that takes place outside the classroom," says Rachel Englehart, "so to be able to bring in business members and people who have a different perspective on what the kids are learning is very beneficial."Englehart is the mother of two. She says just because she's their mom doesn't mean she's the only one with a thing or two to teach them."As long as they've gone through a background check and are qualified to be in there, they are just as able to teach a child as a parent would be."It's a great idea in theory--but how much will it cost?"The only cost associated with this program is the background check," Hopkins says. "It's about 45 to 50 dollars a person."500 tutors at 50 bucks a person adds up to a whopping $25,000. But just as organizers had hoped, the community has already started to step up."US Bank and Bank of Colorado have contributed $10,000 and $5,000 respectively to help underwrite the cost of the program," says Hopkins. After one meeting last week with a few businesses and potential volunteers, the program has already enlisted 30 tutors.Oranizers hope to get the program fully off the ground by October 20. | East Baton Rouge uses online tutoring to raise math scores Posted: 07 Sep 2010 03:43 PM PDT By Tyana Williams - bio | email BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Can you remember how to find the slope of a linear equation? That's just one math problem middle and high school students in East Baton Rouge are solving. The parish school system is introducing a tool aimed to make the tallying less troublesome. "Not everybody is at the same level or ready for same test the same day," said Anthony Kenney, an 8th grader at Westdale Middle School. For thousands of EBR students, if the concepts aren't adding up, a solution is only a click away. This year, using more than $434,000 in stimulus money, the school system is offering middle and high schoolers free math tutoring. The online help is good through September 2011. Kenney says when students log on, they are assigned a tutor who they can talk to using the chat box. They can get step by step help with word problems or long equations. He says the online help is just like having classroom instruction. "They'll help you step by step. Won't criticize you or anything." "It helps kids who are embarrassed to raise their hand and ask a question in class because they are afraid they might get laughed at or might not understand the answer," said Westdale Middle Principal Sherry Brock. Brock says it has been years since some parents have seen the problems their children are bringing home, this online help gives the students immediate assistance over the computer. "They are technologically savvy. That's how they learn." Tutors are available everyday from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Students say whatever they write on their screen, their tutor also sees. Organizers say since last week, 400 students have added their name to the tutoring list. The state also uses a similar online homework help site. EBR says they are focusing more on math help to improve test scores in that area. The school system will receive monthly reports from the tutoring site, so they can understand where students are struggling and where they've mastered other skills. Copyright 2010 WAFB.
