S.C. DOT finally holds Strand meeting

The S.C. Department of Transportation commission will hold its first meeting along the Grand Strand in nearly two years this summer, giving local leaders a chance to tout this area's road and mass transportation needs.

"The commission does not often meet outside of Columbia, so hosting them here illustrates our ability and our clout, as well as the need to be heard," said state Rep. Tracy Edge, R-North Myrtle Beach, who announced the meeting.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 15at the North Myrtle Beach City Hall.

Edge said he plans to present the commission with a list of Horry County highway needs, including: the construction of Interstate 73-74; the extension of the Carolina Bays Parkway north around Little River; and the expansion of S.C. 90 from two lanes to four lanes.

"I think it's a great opportunity . . . to highlight the pressing needs that we have," Edge said.

Club to hold memorial tree dedication

The South Strand Republican Club will dedicate a live oak to the memory of Jaci Pace Herron, who died Nov. 27, 2009.

The dedication ceremony, at Horry County South Strand Government Complex, 9630 Scipio Lane, just off Holmestown Road, will take place Sept. 18.
