| New tutoring program pairs 50 Large program with FSU students Posted: 18 Jul 2010 11:15 PM PDT (2 of 2) The targeted tutoring program has zeroed in on magazines such as Sports Illustrated and a genre of fiction that will interest high-school age young men, even if their reading level is middle school or lower. Paul Langan and Anne Schraff, co-authors of "The Bully," are typical of the writers being introduced to the 50 Large readers. The FSU students participating in the new program also benefit greatly. Said Carroll: "This gives them a much more focused opportunity instead of in a classroom setting. What we're really working on are bigger-picture issues — motivation, getting students involved and seeing themselves as students." Educators agree that reading holds the key to academic success, which translates into better-paying jobs and other rewards. But getting young men who have fallen behind in reading to suddenly want to read — much less enjoy it — is no simple task. "These guys typically have not learned how to succeed in school. They've had typically poor records early on and experienced failure in school," Carroll said. "For a lot of them, there's a parallel between failing in school and being at risk of dropping out. "We're trying to fight against that and help them succeed. We want them to care." Larry Thompson, the school district's special projects coordinator, used a federal grant to launch 50 Large last summer. He's thrilled to be working with FSU as the program develops. Not every at-risk teen is a candidate for 50 Large, Thompson said, because too many aren't prepared to change their behavior. "It's not mandatory. It takes guys with vision and commitment," Thompson said. "It's basic stuff, but some of the guys, they just don't want to pull their pants up. "We're trying to pull them in and develop that connection. We feel that if we zone in and get these guys reading on grade level and hopefully higher, that's kind of the gatekeeper. We want these guys to enjoy reading and their academics all-around will improve." Desmon McNealy, a junior at Godby High School who is paired with FSU graduate student Danna Holihan, spent the first part of Thursday's session going over words they know will be on the SAT. "I really can't say how much this has helped so far," McNealy said, "but I know in the end it's going to help me a lot."
