Tutoring program begins Monday

Full Committed Ministry, through its Community Outreach Program, is beginning a tutoring program Sept. 6.

Ten children will be selected for each of the four categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grades; 5th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades.

Class times and days vary, depending on the grade of the student. Fridays are set aside for extra help, absentees and special testing.

"Because our aim is to mentor the leaders of tomorrow the criteria for selection of the children will be left to the discretion of the staff," program director Tina Ratliff Boley said. "The children must be manageable, willing to learn and willing to excel.

"We prefer students whose parents take an active interest in their child's education."

There is a minimal fee for the tutoring to cover the cost of supplies and necessities, Boley said.

Space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For more information, call Boley at 750-1378.

MANCHESTER: High school juniors, seniors take on task of tutoring peers in Dutch Tutoring

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 08:18 AM PDT

When freshmen walk the halls of Manchester High School for the first time this year, a new program will be available to make sure they get through their first set of core classes.

New to MHS this year is Dutch Tutoring, with approximately 30 upperclassmen trained to assist freshmen and sophomores in various subjects.

"It's level-one intervention," high school principal Kevin Mowrer said. "Freshmen and sophomores are typically the kids struggling, particularly freshman year in core subjects."

Those core subjects include biology, English 9, world history and algebra.

Mowrer said that more than two student tutors will be available for subjects that are commonly struggled with, but tutors in other subjects are also available.

"Upperclassmen applied and were chosen to tutor specific subjects of interest and aptitude," he said. "There were two trainings over the summer to facilitate skill development in the Dutch Tutoring program. Students learned the basics of tutoring, role-played scenarios, and worked on their abilities to help their fellow students."

Students will also have a common meeting ground this year for those who wish to meet at school in the morning. This year the high school's media center and library will be open daily for student use promptly at 7:30 a.m. All students are welcome to use computers, books and periodicals at that time.

"If a struggling student has some questions as they go through homework, then maybe once or twice a week these tutors will supply some support and mentoring," Mowrer said. "All tutors have gotten an 'A' in those classes."

Students interested in receiving help should contact Manchester High School's Guidance Office or Mowrer at kmowrer@mcs.k12.mi.us. Most tutoring will be available in the morning before school.
