Tutoring program begins Monday

Full Committed Ministry, through its Community Outreach Program, is beginning a tutoring program Sept. 6.

Ten children will be selected for each of the four categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grades; 5th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades.

Class times and days vary, depending on the grade of the student. Fridays are set aside for extra help, absentees and special testing.

"Because our aim is to mentor the leaders of tomorrow the criteria for selection of the children will be left to the discretion of the staff," program director Tina Ratliff Boley said. "The children must be manageable, willing to learn and willing to excel.

"We prefer students whose parents take an active interest in their child's education."

There is a minimal fee for the tutoring to cover the cost of supplies and necessities, Boley said.

Space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For more information, call Boley at 750-1378.

Project Jumpstart tutoring program gets underway for fall

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 11:46 AM PDT

Moberly, Mo. —

The Project Jumpstart tutoring program began Tuesday evening under the guidance of Sylvia Ganaway and 13 tutors. Thirteen students arrived at the Allendale location and didn't miss their opportunity to receive some one-on-one guidance.
Sylvia Ganaway underwent knee replacement surgery and shared she was unable to contact and collect many donations of supplies and snacks in advance for the children, but enough to get the program off to a good start Tuesday evening.
More volunteers are needed as more students are signed up for program.  Tutors include: George Wilson, Herb and Mona Lawrence, Ruth Ann Reid, Suzanne Gold, Marilyn Hayes, Telia Saunders, Samantha Conway, Valerie Loveless, Travis Guyton, Ronda Blakley, Torrie Derboven, and Vi Barton. One-on-one tutoring is the goal and works well for both the tutors and students. Sandy Conway says she helps do whatever Miss Sylvia needs done.
Marcel McClain provided much help preparing the computers for student use this fall. He is now off to college at Maryville.
Their library offers the opportunity for students to read books that are age appropriate and are approved by the Moberly Public School District.
Sylvia Ganaway expresses her gratitude to everyone that has already helped Project Jumpstart with his or her time, school supplies, books, and monetary donations.
