| Tutoring program begins Monday Posted: 13 Sep 2010 08:46 AM PDT Full Committed Ministry, through its Community Outreach Program, is beginning a tutoring program Sept. 6. Ten children will be selected for each of the four categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grades; 5th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades. Class times and days vary, depending on the grade of the student. Fridays are set aside for extra help, absentees and special testing. "Because our aim is to mentor the leaders of tomorrow the criteria for selection of the children will be left to the discretion of the staff," program director Tina Ratliff Boley said. "The children must be manageable, willing to learn and willing to excel."We prefer students whose parents take an active interest in their child's education." There is a minimal fee for the tutoring to cover the cost of supplies and necessities, Boley said. Space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, call Boley at 750-1378. | Free tutoring services at some Miami-Dade schools Posted: 12 Sep 2010 10:02 PM PDT The state approved the Miami-Dade school district to provide free tutoring services for students at certain schools. Under federal law, students who attend struggling schools and are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, an indicator of poverty, are entitled to free tutoring outside of the regular school day. In Florida, more than 400 private companies and non-profit organizations have been approved to provide extra help. Two school districts -- Dade and Hillsboro -- joined the list this year. ``Using these services extends the school day in a seamless fashion,'' said Gloria Arazoza, who oversees the program for the Miami-Dade district. ``It can help kids get the skills they need to pass the FCAT and to progress onto the next grade level.'' Tutoring is offered before and after school and on the weekends, depending on the school. Tutors cover reading, language arts, math and science. Parents in Miami-Dade have until Sept. 17 to enroll their children. For more information, contact your child's school or call 305-995-7563. -- KATHLEEN McGRORY This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
| Reading center provides tutoring services for campus community Posted: 12 Sep 2010 03:34 PM PDT By Joe Stando Starting September 28, Western Michigan University will be offering a number of tutoring services to local elementary and middle school students through the McGinnis Reading Center and Clinic. The clinic, located in Sangren Hall, offers programs for K-12 students to improve reading, writing and critical literacy skills. The programs also provide internship opportunities for graduate students seeking a master's degree in literacy studies. "The center has actually been around since 1932," said Dr. Susan Piazza, director of the McGinnis Reading Center and Clinic. "When it began, it was considered a psycho-educational clinic." "It has changed a great deal over this time," Piazza continued. "Now we focus more on critical reading and writing skills development and service learning programs in the community. We're experiencing growing pains right now, in terms of meeting the higher demand from the community for our services. There will be many more changes over the next few years as the new Sangren is revealed." The clinic has also developed a name for itself in the Kalamazoo community. "We advertise in the Gazette and use WMU's advertising resources, but a lot of our students come to us from word of mouth," said Piazza. "A lot of Kalamazoo teachers and principals recommend our services to parents who ask for tutoring assistance." The clinic includes meeting and reading rooms, as well as a library stocked with children's books, magazines, and educational games. "Many of these books are donated," said Piazza. "We have an anonymous donor who gives us $1,000 per year specifically to be spent on books for our collection." In addition to the tutoring services, the clinic provides other opportunities for the community. "This year, we are hosting Family Literacy Nights in Kalamazoo Public Libraries during the year," said Piazza. "We will offer four of them per semester, and they're funded by the Target Corporation. Over the summer we also held a series of professional development workshops at KVCC's Learning Center."
