Tutoring program begins Monday

Full Committed Ministry, through its Community Outreach Program, is beginning a tutoring program Sept. 6.

Ten children will be selected for each of the four categories: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grades; 5th-6th grades and 7th-8th grades.

Class times and days vary, depending on the grade of the student. Fridays are set aside for extra help, absentees and special testing.

"Because our aim is to mentor the leaders of tomorrow the criteria for selection of the children will be left to the discretion of the staff," program director Tina Ratliff Boley said. "The children must be manageable, willing to learn and willing to excel.

"We prefer students whose parents take an active interest in their child's education."

There is a minimal fee for the tutoring to cover the cost of supplies and necessities, Boley said.

Space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For more information, call Boley at 750-1378.

New tutoring, activities for final school year at Jericho

AURORA -- Jericho Circle is coming to an end. But the Rev. Mark Smith wants to make sure it ends, as he says, on a high note.

Smith is the CEO of the Center for Community Empowerment, a not-for-profit organization that has been active in the Aurora community for seven years. Smith, who heads the downtown church A Place of Change, helped start Operation Helping Hands and has worked with other pastors and the city of Aurora to help other Aurora Housing Authority complexes.

Starting this month, the Center for Community Empowerment will be bringing its services to Jericho Circle. At a Monday afternoon reception at Jericho's community center, Smith said his organization would offer tutoring services and supplement the activities already in place at Jericho.

They also will create a transition team to help residents move out of the complex once the time comes, Smith said. The housing complex on Aurora's West Side is to be demolished because of extensive deterioration of the almost 40-year-old buildings.

Free tutoring will be provided twice a week through the Education Empowerment Foundation, for which Smith works as regional director. The tutoring program will be funded through No Child Left Behind, and Smith is hoping to set up classes right at Jericho Circle.

Smith calls the transition team the most ambitious part of the plan. Jericho Circle is scheduled for demolition sometime next year, and the AHA has already applied for assistance from the federal government to relocate the residents. Smith would like to provide training in budgeting and household management, and give each resident a one-on-one meeting to make sure their needs are met.

The Center for Community Empowerment was invited to Jericho Circle by the resident council. Arlisia Dockery, president of the council, works for the company as a site coordinator.

Smith's plans were met with enthusiasm by AHA's executive director, Jean Federman, who said the housing authority "does not necessarily have all the resources to bring what you can provide to them."

She was especially pleased with the transition team idea, and said the AHA has been looking for people to help Jericho families prepare for the move.

Even though Jericho Circle is coming down, Smith said the CCE's efforts there could be a template for future work with the AHA.

"We want people to say that this last year of Jericho Circle was the best year of Jericho Circle," Smith said.
