Ah, summer time. Lazy days, warm nights. Time to hang out with friends and, for some, work a summer job. The Lake Forester will feature a summer-long series highlighting local teens and young adults who have summer jobs in town.

Who: Kyle Werner, branch manager of Ivy Insiders at 100 N. Field Drive in Lake Forest.

Age: 19

Attends: Bowdoin College

How long have you worked as an Ivy Insider branch manager: I started training in March and started tutoring students for the ACT two weeks ago. This is the first summer I worked. I work during college breaks, too.

Main duties: I send out letters to all sophomores and juniors at Lake Forest High School. I'm fielding calls and following up on the letters I send out. I lead the classes. They are three-week courses that meet two days a week. I just finished up the first session. I tutor in all sections: Math, English, Reading and Science.

What was your ACT score: I got a 35. Everybody in class asks me, so do their parents. Parents are happy I got such a good score. They think I'll probably be able to help their kid, which is true.

Do you see a lot of people you know: Some people I know, some people I don't know.

What do you like most about the job: Certainly, the tutoring. I want to be a teacher, probably a high school teacher. This is the first chance I've had to make a lesson plan and follow-through on it. It's really exciting to see the students' scores go up.

Like least: Trying to sell the program, writing the letters and calling people. I feel like I'm invading their personal time. But I get through it, so I can tutor. In the beginning, the kids are not happy to be there. By the end of the course, they get it.

Are you a scholar: I don't study excessively, but I make sure I do all my work. I graduated first in my class from Lake Forest High School in 2009.

Does the job correlate to your future career: Yes, it's almost like a trial one. I'm making lesson plans, giving lectures. It's very analogous to teaching.

Do you prefer this to school: Definitely. I don't really like being in class that much. I like learning, but I don't like sitting there. I'm having a lot of fun in this job. It's my favorite job of all the jobs I've ever had.
