The Vision Literacy Center in downtown Quincy is getting ready to launch its annual "Jump Start" summer tutoring program. Students in grades K-7 who need extra work on reading, math or spelling will be able to get one-on-one tutoring for an hour a day starting Monday. The aim is to reinforce some of the things youngsters learned in school this past year and help them prepare for the upcoming academic year. "What we found is most students lose a lot of what they gained throughout the school year during the summer months," said Roderick Warren, director of the center, housed on the second floor of the Maine Center, 525 Maine. "Our goal is to provide them the help they need to give them a jump start on the upcoming school year." Susie Mating, a teacher at the center, said most students attend two days a week in the summer. During the regular school year, the center offers two 15-week tutoring sessions -- one in the fall, one in the spring. During those sessions, Warren said, students come in two or four times a week. "We ask the parents to make a 15-week commitment" during the regular sessions, he said. "There's got to be a partnership between our program and the parent in order for this to be successful," Warren said. "We try to close the gap between where a student is and where the parent wants them to be academically." Mating feels the tutoring program is beneficial to many youngsters.
