| Tutoring programs try to break cycle for homeless children Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:07 PM PDT Homeless children get helpCatherine Jun / The Detroit NewsRoyal Oak After falling on hard times, the Williams family bounced from home to home and last year landed at a homeless shelter. Keeping their spirits up was one thing. Making sure the five Williams children's grades didn't slip was another challenge. "I had concerns about my kids' schooling," said Michira Williams, 37. As the school year comes to an end, agencies are offering tutoring and mentoring programs throughout the summer as shelters see a growing number of families with children come through their doors. The average age of a homeless person in the United States is 9 and shelters are trying to ease the trauma for children who move from shelter to shelter and school to school. Ultimately, officials hope their efforts put a stop to a common trend: Children of homeless parents can grow up to become homeless adults. Advertisement At the South Oakland Shelter in Royal Oak, the Williamses found a tutor to help the children, now ages 6 to 16, ease into new schools. "Most people, they help you and move you along," said Williams, who now lives in Ferndale. "It has made us a stronger family." Economic troubles swelled the number of children in homeless families in 2009, to 20,104, a 14 percent increase over the previous year, according to the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness. At the South Oakland Shelter, children make up 30 percent of the individuals who seek emergency lodging. In the past year, the agency began recruiting volunteers to mentor and tutor children there. They have taken them on trips to the zoo, bowling alley and the movie theater. The agency is seeking grant money to expand the program and furnish school supplies for children. "This is definitely an area we'd like to grow," said Austin Kralisz, a volunteer coordinator. "We want to be able to create an environment where they can do those things and not be affected by their situation right now." Studies have shown the mobility of homelessness can hurt children, causing depression and struggles in school. That is in part why homelessness can afflict successive generations. "We have moms here that came to this shelter as kids," said Barbara McCauley, captain of the Salvation Army's Harbor Light location in Detroit, which houses 146 at its shelter, about 80 of them children. Hoping to break the cycle, two staffers come in five days a week to help children with their homework, which continues through the summer. "Typically when kids move from school to school, they can lose up to three months of education," McCauley said. On a recent afternoon, a 7-year-old boy sat with an instructor, plodding through math problems assigned by his teacher. "He gets frustrated working with mom on homework," said Christina Beneteau, the boy's mother, who recently arrived at the shelter from Taylor with her two children. "With the moving around, he's been a little mad at mom." The time also gives the single mother, forced to give up her midnight shifts at a nursing home when she couldn't find affordable child care, some hours to send out resumes for a new job. "I'm able to work on my stuff," Beneteau said. cjun@detnews.com (313) 222-2019 Five Filters featured article: Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack On the Gaza Peace Flotilla.
