Piscataway – The Tutoring Center of Piscataway, 1318 Centennial Ave., will host a grand opening celebration from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 5. Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler and Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula will be on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Also attending will be Linda Griggs, executive director of the Piscataway, Middlesex, South Plainfield (PMSP) Chamber of Commerce and Gene Bozzo, chamber president. Balamurthy (Bala) Devarajan, director of The Tutoring Center of Piscataway and a resident of Middlesex County for 16 years, believes this is a perfect time to start his new business. With the current situation of the education system and budget cuts, Devarajan said that many programs in the local school systems will be impacted. "It is necessary to ensure that our kids have another medium to keep up with their education to reach their full potential. I am happy to be part of an initiative in this area that will provide an environment where kids can enjoy learning and reach for the highest star," he said. The Tutoring Center of Piscataway is a part of a network of franchises across the country and the first one to open in New Jersey. Devarajan interviewed and hired local teachers, assistant instructors and interns from the area. "Our instructors are certified teachers currently teaching in the public schools. Some hold higher degrees and have experience working with kids with special needs, such as ADD, ADHD or other concentration problems," said Devarajan. "Our interns are all from Piscataway High School and in the top five percent of their class. They have been recommended by their school teachers, are very strong in math and reading and have a very calm and composed personality. I think the older students attending our center will be able to relate better to our interns because they act as good mentors," Devarajan said. The center will serve students from pre-school through 12th grade, offering individualized, one-to-one instruction using a patent-pending system of delivery called "The Rotational Approach to Learning" designed to increase attention span, focus and concentration in a fun, enjoyable and stress-free environment. Devarajan explained, "We use positive reinforcement where each student is rewarded for making an effort. Our system is designed to celebrate all successes that a student achieves within The Tutoring Center, as well as outside." The center's hours of operation will be the same during the summer as during the school year, from Monday through Thursday, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Devarajan noted that summer is a great time to prepare children for the academic challenges to come. "It is a time where gaps can be filled without having to worry about keeping up with the rest of the class. Tutoring sessions during the summer provide an opportunity to dive into materials for the upcoming year in a fun way so that the next school year will not be so stressful," he said. At the grand opening on Saturday, The Tutoring Center of Piscataway will offer registration for a free diagnostic assessment, as well as $100 Tuition Awards and a coupon for two free sessions. The center is located in the Piscataway Towne Center, next to ShopRite.
