Tutoring Center guarantees results

Dotty Josh is so convinced of the effectiveness of the method used at her new business, The Tutoring Center of Wilton, that she guarantees free sessions if students' grades don't improve. "If a student doesn't see their grade go up one notch after working with us we will provide free sessions," she said.

Ms. Josh said this guarantee would take effect after "40-45 sessions" at her new center, at 5 River Road. The Tutoring Center is part of a national franchise started in 1994 by Dr. Edward Thalheimer, a California educator.

Dr. Thalheimer's "unique system is based on the rotational approach to learning," said Ms. Josh, who has a degree in economics and computer science from Mahatma Gandhi University in India. "This uses one-to-one instruction, in one 30-minute session and two 15-minute increments, at different locations."

The strategy is based on research showing that "for the average child, their concentration span is 20 minutes," said Ms. Josh, who lives in Norwalk. Studies have also shown that one-to-one instruction is more effective than small groups, she said.

When she decided to open this kind of business, Ms. Josh researched several other tutoring franchises and was most impressed with The Tutoring Center. "This method is the most effective," she said. "We have already seen good results."

The Tutoring Center has been open since the end of March, and the grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, June 5. It provides programs for students in grades K-12 in reading, writing, math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, kindergarten readiness, and summer programs.

"We will add ACT and SAT prep in the future," Ms. Josh said.

The Tutoring Center's system is also "incentive-based," in which students are rewarded for positive results and behavior with prizes such as movie coupons, toys, gift cards and candy.

"We make learning fun," Ms. Josh said.

So far, approximately 15 students have enrolled from throughout the Wilton area, and they are being taught by a staff of four "highly qualified" instructors, according to Ms. Josh.

The cost is approximately $37 per session, she said.

Wilton is an ideal place for The Tutoring Center because "the community is very pro-education," she said. "Wilton has some of the best schools in the country, but some students still need a little help."
