| Posted: 26 Jun 2010 09:18 PM PDT When Amie Hanneken became a casualty of her school district's budget cuts, the former Edwardsville teacher decided she wasn't going to let her misfortune stop her from following her passion. Last Monday, Hanneken kicked off classes at the new Building Bonds and Bridges Education Center in Edwardsville with a "Beach Boys and Girls" Summer Math Camp. "I was pushed in this direction by being laid off, but this is my way of continuing to teach kids," she said. "With pre-k programs being cut and classroom sizes getting larger, this is a definite need for the community." The summer courses run for one week and are available for first- through eighth-grade students who need additional help with math skills. "The best way to teach is by getting (the students) involved," Hanneken said. "It is not just notes on the board without any reason or rationale; students need to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. "It is great seeing those 'aha!' moments. It gives me chills and always reminds me why I got into teaching." This summer, the center also will offer parent and child classes, allowing parents to become interactive in children's learning process. "I don't believe there is anything like this in the area," she said. "The classes are geared toward parents, nannies or grandparents who want a way for stay-at-home kids to learn social skills. I develop the activities and take care of the cleanup so that they can just enjoy the time with their children. "For parents who may only have their child a couple of days per week, this is a good (and productive) way to be able to spend time together." Hanneken graduated from Milliken University with a degree in secondary education-biology and endorsements in middle school math. She has seven years of teaching experience, and said working with students in different age levels and environments has taught her to use visuals and hands-on demonstrations to become the most effective instructor. "I would take my son to the YMCA and watch him participate in the classes," she said. "He was having so much fun, and I was wishing we were spending that quality time together. (At the same time), I saw a parent there trying to help her child with fractions." Hanneken decided to create a center where parents and children could work together in an educational environment. She attended SIU small business meetings, financial meetings in Fairview Heights, and talked to the Chamber of Commerce to prepare for her experience as a business owner. "I also have wonderful friends and co-workers who have volunteered their time to help me out with preparations and donations, especially Shea Lox," she said. Julie Podshadley works with Hanneken at the center, as well. "We have a great location," Hanneken added. "We are just off I-270 in the Sunset Hills Executive Park, so whether you are from Wood River, Bethalto, Collinsville or Granite City you can get here pretty quickly." Hanneken's daily inspiration is her 3-year-old son, Joe. She said in addition to teaching her the new songs he learns in day care, Joe enjoys dinosaurs, playing volleyball and swimming. | Kiss Your Brain tutoring center up and running Posted: 26 Jun 2010 12:58 AM PDT Walk into Chasity Carr's classroom, and you can almost hear a pin drop. Save for the soft music humming in the background, silence reigns in this kindergarten classroom, where a group of children are busy painting using watercolor. "This is Race to the Finish Week, this is where we combine everything they learned since we started," said Carr, the co-owner of Kiss Your Brain, L.L.C., a new tutoring center for children. "Tomorrow they'll get awards for how well they did all summer long." Carr, a certified teacher, and her husband, Doug Carr, said their new tutoring center opened earlier this year and is the result of what they saw as a need in the community. Chastity Carr said she saw a need for one-on-one tutoring and small group sessions for some students. Kiss Your Brain is offering academic summer camps. "We started off with five kids, and by the end of May we had 20 kids enrolled for tutoring." A former teacher in the Rapides Parish School District, Carr said the center was also formed in response to many parents' requests for her to tutor. The center is at 3917 Independence Drive in Alexandria. As soon as the center opened, a wave of students registered to get LEAP tutoring. "We did tutoring from March through May," Chasity Carr said. She said the family-oriented atmosphere seems to be attracting parents, many of whom have known the Carrs. Doug Carr, who was a paraprofessional in the Rapides Parish School District and also worked as a revenue auditor for 10 years at UPS, said the center is a dream come true. "I always asked God to let me do something with kids because I've always loved kids, and my biggest reward is seeing their unconditional love for adults," he said. Doug Carr, whose three daughters, Kailyn, 10, Khloe, 9, and Kellie, 2, also attend the center, said for him, children are the future, and he wants to help build that future. "I enjoy children. I think every child has the ability to be something in life," said Doug Carr, whose mother also works at the center. Many of the children at the center, including John Francis Jones, 8, are from Peabody Montessori Elementary School in Alexandria. "My favorite (activity) is painting," John said as he dragged his paintbrush over a blue house. "I like doing math here, and it's a lot of fun with Mrs. Chasity," Jaycee Calvert, 7, said.
