| Students create volunteer website for tutoring project (The Daily Utah Chronicle) Posted: 08 Mar 2010 06:15 AM PST Bryan Rossiter's first experience working with children at the Christmas Box House shelter was when he was 14 years old, making gingerbread houses and donating hygiene kits. Now he wants others to follow suit. Rossiter and four others have put together a tutoring project to help out the children at the Christmas Box House. The group created a website where volunteers can log on and use a calendar to schedule a 90-minute time slot to tutor the children. "Our goal is to get 200 people to sign up, and so far we've got about 15 percent filled," said Parker Ence, a junior in economics who is part of the team. "I did the tutoring," said Rossiter, an undecided sophomore. "It was an awesome experience. It was a really cool way to help." The Christmas Box House is a shelter for infants and children up to 11 years old who have been removed from their homes by the state because of abuse or neglect. These children go to school and have a program for tutoring, but they still need volunteers to make it happen. The project also is for an entrepreneurship class. The class divides students into groups that go into the community to find a way to help, said Ence. "Bryan had done some service at the Christmas Box House, so we called them," Ence said. When they decided to work with the house and found their need for tutoring, the group decided it would be cool to get college students to help the kids with their homework, Ence said. The group had three goals in mind when they started: provide tutoring for the kids, become role models and introduce them to the U. "As much as you are helping them with their assignments, you are their friend," Rossiter said. "(You are) inspiring them to do whatever they want to do by showing them what you are doing." Students can only volunteer once every four months unless they get a full background check. The children's hour for homework tutoring is Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. "For being such a small time commitment, you won't forget it," Ence said. "It kind of fills a cool spot in your life to give back." The program is a great opportunity for college students to get involved and help children who probably wouldn't have gotten help before, said Ashley Eppich, an undecided freshman who is part of the team. "Already a ton of people have signed up," she said. "I think already it's been a success." Be the first to comment on this article!Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
