| The Tutoring Center educates Temecula Posted: 25 Feb 2011 09:46 PM PST Friday, February 25th, 2011 TEMECULA––With funding for public schools decreasing, and classroom sizes increasing, students have a greater chance of not having their academic needs met. The Tutoring Center of Temecula, however, provides a supplement to the classroom. The Tutoring Center has locations across the nation; the Temecula location opened last July, and they specialize in individualized one-on-one instruction for grades K-12. Instruction is individualized through a diagnostic test "which quickly and accurately pinpoints the child's strengths and weaknesses and skills needed for improvement," said Elizabeth Nercessian, the center's director. No matter the students' specific needs, the center has a four-part mission set for every child; the first portion is to develop academic skills in reading, writing, and math. Regardless of the student's intellectual ability, schoolwork can't be completed without focus and concentration; therefore, these skills comprise the second portion of the center's mission. Next tutors work with the students on gaining confidence and motivation, which leads to the fourth step of creating stronger test-taking and study skills. After the diagnostic is assessed, parents are given a suggested enrollment timeline. Students are assigned to either two or three 60-minute sessions per week, and the recommended enrollment is designed to achieve dramatic results. There are no contracts to sign for the enrollments duration, as each student will have different needs. However, the only way to accomplish their mission is time, said Nercessian. The individuals guiding the students through the tutoring experience all have Bachelor's degrees, and some hold Master's degrees and professional credentials. Nercessian said instructors are chosen based on their past experiences, enthusiasm, and passion for helping children in the community. "Our instructors are the best of the best," she added. Top students from local colleges and universities work at the Tutoring Center as assistant instructors. Some centers also utilize interns, who are Advertisement All the instructors are trained and certified to carry out the center's Rotational Approach to Learning system. This system cuts down on distractions, and boredom as students get to move to a new setting with a new instructor and new materials. Each child works with two different tutors and then gets to independently work on the skills he or she worked on. Home tutoring is convenient, said Nercessian, but it's distracting. Students can't utilize the benefit of multiple instructors and sets of materials. Also, according to The Tutoring Center's Web site, at-home tutoring doesn't get to the root of a student's learning gaps; it's merely a short-term fix. Gaps in student's learning cannot be as readily addressed when educators' resources are being stretched thin due to loss of funding, resources, and growing student to teacher ratios. According to Nercessian, the tutoring industry is growing, but can't necessarily be attributed to larger class sizes. However, "they don't help," she added. "Our commitment is to team-up with parents and teachers, to provide one-on-one instruction, and to maximize each student's success," said Nercessian. Not everyone can afford outside tutoring, but another option is to enroll in the Tutoring Center's online tutoring. The site, which has been running since Jan. 30, 2011, provides 24-hour homework help in math, science, English, and test-prep. Students can communicate with tutors via chatting or with an audio icon that allows him or her to speak with the tutor. There is also a videoconference option.
