Northwest Assistance Ministries' Rotary Learning Center is now offering basic literacy tutoring through a partnership with Literacy Advance of Houston. The individualized tutoring program is open to all persons aged 16 and above and is free of charge. The program is designed for English-speaking clients who wish to improve their reading skills.

Registration for the program will be March 1 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. at NAM, 15555 Kuykendahl Road. The 12-week tutoring sessions begin on March 14. Students can meet with their tutor twice a week for two-hour sessions or once a week for a three-hour session.

Literacy tutoring is a critical need in Harris County. According to the U.S. Department of Education, one in five Harris County residents cannot read. Illiteracy can result in chronic unemployment, poor health due to less understanding of preventative services and prescriptions, and can even hinder the education of children.

"We are pleased to partner with Literacy Advance to meet this basic need in our community," said Carole Little, NAM president and CEO. "Literacy education is key to leading people to self-sufficiency."
