VANCE - An after-school tutoring program in Vance failed to generate enough interest, the mayor reported during January's Vance Town Council meeting.

Mayor Michael Aiken said few parents had expressed interest in Bright Futures Learning, the after-school tutoring program geared to elementary school students.

A spokesperson for Bright Futures Learning presented the idea for the program to town officials last fall.

Aiken said the program may have been successful if there had been more promotion of it prior to the start of the school year.

Also during the meeting, Aiken noted that the town's annual financial report to the S.C. Budget and Control Board must be submitted by April.

He also presented the town's monthly financial report, noting a total of $3,864.99 in the general fund and the recreation account.

In other business, the mayor reported progress at Vance's community computer lab had been at a standstill since the lab's chief contributor, Dr. Tony-Adams Aburime, a S.C. State University professor, passed away unexpectedly a few months ago.

Councilwoman Alma Mazyck asked the mayor about the progress the Lake Marion Regional Water Agency was making in running water to Vance.

"I haven't heard anything lately," Aiken said, adding that the first phase of the town's hook-up to the system will provide water for fire hydrants only.

Also during the meeting:

* Aiken praised the town's Concerned Citizens group, volunteers and elected officials who helped with the town-sponsored events held during the latter portion of 2010. He said the Treats in the Park (held around Halloween), the meet-and-greet with local officials (in November) and the Christmas parade (Dec. 19) were all successful because of their efforts.

"I'm looking forward to another meet-and-greet in the near future," the mayor said.

* Aiken reported he would attend a two-day course sponsored by the Municipal Association of South Carolina in Columbia Feb. 15-16

Vance Town Council's next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Vance Town Hall.
