The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has intensified its Dr Math tutoring service on mobile instant messenger Mxit.

The service is sorely needed after a nationwide strike by teachers left students ill-prepared for their final exams, Times LIVE reported, with the CSIR now recruiting volunteers.

Over 100 volunteers from around the country have registered to help out from Sundays to Thursdays, with the service being available from 2pm until 10pm.

The Dr Math/Mxit partnership has been running for just over two years, with users simply adding 'Dr Math' to their contacts list and navigating to the Mxit Cares section under the Tradepost.

People wanting to volunteer can send an email to Laurie Butgereit at lbutgereit@meraka.org.za

AHA to continue tutoring, homework help

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 06:36 PM PST

ALTON — After-school tutoring and homework help will continue through the end of the school year at two Alton Housing Authority community centers, commissioners agreed this week.

"We serve 50 youths. They are excellent tutorial services," AHA Executive Director Andy Hightower said during Tuesday's rescheduled meeting of the Board of Commissioners. "The kids have shown improvement."

He said the children's scores went up on the most recent progress reports from school.

The program is held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, through May.

Some AHA residents had been tutoring through Gov. Pat Quinn's Put Illinois to Work program through Jan. 15, when it ended. Other instructors are volunteers who teach in Jennings, Mo., but live in Alton.

"The after-school program is going really well, and the parents appreciate it," said Lisa Brown, housing manager and program director, who oversees the tutorials.

Besides OKing continuation of the after-school sessions, commissioners passed three other resolutions approving:

- the low bid of $6,800 per year from Orkin Inc. for pest extermination services.

- plans for Executive Assistant Jameca Mays to attend training in Carbondale on March 9 and 10.

- a two-year contract with Loucks and Schwartz of Nappanee, Ind., for accounting services at a cost of $314 per month, with additional fees for other duties.

Hightower reported that he has not had a good response to selling 70 used refrigerators for $75 apiece, selling only seven so far. The refrigerators, which he said are in good condition, were replaced at Alton Acres complex.

Commissioner Tom Hawkins was absent.
