| National Tutoring Company WyzAnt Announces College Scholarship Essay Contest Posted: 08 Feb 2011 06:11 AM PST Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 8, 2011 WyzAnt, a nationwide home tutoring service, announced a college scholarship contest on Monday. The contest is unique in that it encourages applicants to solicit votes for their essay submissions. Responding to the prompt, "Who has been the most important teacher, tutor, or coach in your life and why?", scholarship applicants write a short essay and advance to the finals based on popular vote. Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2011 and winners will be announced in early June. Justin Chiles, Director of Operations for the Chicago-based company, said the idea for a college scholarship contest was based on some of the same principles that WyzAnt uses to conduct their day-to-day tutoring business. "As a company that uses technology to help build an educational community, we wanted to give scholarship applicants a host of tools to tap into their social networks," Chiles said. "This scholarship contest is about reflecting upon an influential figure in your life and using technology to share your experience with a larger audience--particularly one that understands the valuable roll teachers, tutors, and coaches play in our society." After submitting their essay, applicants can use WyzAnt's website to share the submission with email contacts, Facebook friends, and Twitter followers. Top vote recipients advance to the finals where their essays are reviewed by WyzAnt tutors. As of this writing, WyzAnt lists over 31,000 tutors on their site. By using tutors to help judge essay applications, WyzAnt hopes to highlight the value of personalized instruction: "When you really get down to it, a tutor helps someone else learn or perfect a skill with one-on-one attention," said Chiles. "We know that the tutors on our site are very proud of their ability to help others and this scholarship contest gives tutors an opportunity to see the value of their work on a national level." About this company: WyzAnt, Inc. is a nationwide tutor-student matching service. Individuals ranging from English tutors to science tutors compose profiles on WyzAnt's website and receive tutoring requests from local students. Tutors can also receive feedback on their profiles, add additional information about areas of specialization, and blog about their interests and tutoring experience. Started in 2005, WyzAnt plans to run an annual scholarship contest for new and existing users. # # # This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
