Literacy Coalition seeks volunteers |
| Literacy Coalition seeks volunteers Posted: 31 Jan 2011 08:24 AM PST The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition seeks volunteers for tutoring. Once trained, volunteers can tutor students one-on-one, in small groups or in classrooms and also assist with specific projects and events. Training sessions will be conducted at Knox College in room 103 of George Davis Hall from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Those who cannot attend the session may complete their training at other sessions scheduled throughout the year. Anyone interested in training at another time or place or to register for training, may contact Cathy Lagnese, office assistant, at 341-5330, or Carlos Duncan, outreach worker, at 341-5329 or cduncan@sandburg.edu. The needs of students range from lack of reading skills to more specific needs such as passing the GED or passing job-related tests. Basic math and English as a second language tutors are also needed. Volunteer involvement is arranged to meet the volunteer's availability. Tutoring sites include public libraries, churches, schools, nursing homes and retirement homes. By attending the training sessions, volunteers will be able to complete the 16 hours of literacy training required by the Illinois State Literacy Office. After completing this training and participating in four hours of observation or tutoring, participants will also earn one continuing education credit from Carl Sandburg College. The state requires that tutors have a high school diploma or a GED. The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and is supported by funds received from the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Community College Board, United Way of Knox County and donations from individuals and local organizations.
