University of North Alabama students will be eligible for tutoring, academic counseling, testing services and study skills development in one location this fall as the school's two service centers merge into a single location in Keller Hall.

The Academic Resources Center and the Center for Academic Advising and Retention Services have merged, meaning students will have a one-stop shop for services.

Laura Hardin, director of the Center for Academic Advising and Retention Services, said merging the two centers will eliminate the referral process from faculty members and the need to direct a student to another center for services.

The result, Hardin said, will be on-the-spot arrangements for tutoring and study skills assistance and a more efficient process.

"Our goal is to expand the services, but at the same time target services so they will meet the needs of students whose academic success is at risk," Hardin said. "All academic services previously offered will continue and plans are under way to address specific areas of need in new ways. We can bring new emphasis to our retention services. We want to be an office of academic outreach to students to help them realize their goal of earning a college degree."

Hardin said the center will recruit quality tutors who will be available for instruction in math and other areas. The services are free for students.

The center also provides academic programming for student orientation sessions, advises undecided majors and provides academic counseling.
