| Customers of shuttered Sylvan Learning Center will get satisfaction Posted: 27 May 2010 04:29 PM PDT NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - The WAVE 3 Troubleshooter gets results for families who lost thousands when a tutoring company, shut down overnight. The owners of Sylvan Tutoring in New Albany closed their doors without telling parents, or refunding their money. Now, not only do some of these kids have substitute tutors, but we've also learned Sylvan parents are going to able to get their money's worth out of Sylvan after all. Amanda Sullivan and her 6-year-old son, Jared, were left high and dry by the owners of Sylvan Learning Center in New Albany. The tutoring company shut down back in March without warning, and without refunding the $4,000 Amanda pre-paid for a summer tutoring package. "Fortunately WAVE 3 aired the story, and Achievers Tutoring of Kentucky came forward," Amanda said. Achievers Tutoring of Kentucky called hours after our report aired. You can find them on the web at www.achieverstutoringofkentucky.com. The phone number is 502-742-2559. Owner Christopher Cummins offered free summer tutoring for Jared, and 15 year old Brelin Duley. Her grandma paid Sylvan New Albany more than $3,600 for tutoring, and got less than half of it. "Hopefully, by the time school starts they are going to be up to grade level," Cummins said. "The confidence is going to be there, the motivation is going to be there." The whole mess has motivated Sylvan's corporate office to make changes too. After getting calls from the Troubleshooter unit and from angry customers, Sylvan corporate office worked a deal with its largest franchisee. Based in Ohio, Randy Rhode said the deal should be finalized within days. He hopes to have the New Albany tutoring center re-opened June 7th. He also made a pledge to make good on any tutoring the old owners skipped out on. "So for any family that has prepaid for services to the former owners they can come forward to us, contact us directly and we will honor those," Rhode said. "We don't want to see any family left out, specifically any student that has a need that was depending upon Sylvan services, to go unserved." It's good news for moms like Amanda, but more important for Jared, who is finally getting the help he deserves. "He's just done amazing lately," Amanda said. Because he is finally getting the help he deserves. "The fact that someone out there would care enough to come forward and volunteer their services and their time, I needed that to feel the good in people again." Rhode said he doesn't know how many families out there paid for tutoring they didn't get. But he says anyone who thinks they're still owed sessions should contact them directly at the office starting June 7. Copyright 2010 WAVE News. All rights reserved.
