Child-care tutoring program gains favor in Town Council

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 02:02 AM PDT

Truck traffic concerns have the Town Council wavering about whether an industrial park is a good location for a tutoring and social skills program for children with developmental disabilities.

Councilmen have expressed a willingness to give Behavior & Learning Solutions a chance, though, and are expected to give it probationary approval on Tuesday to locate at 8762 Louisiana St.

Jill McNeill wants to move Behavior & Learning Solutions from Crown Point to the industrial area off Mississippi Street.

McNeill, a certified assistant behavior analyst, said she needs a building with high ceilings to accommodate a moonwalk and other gym-based activities for her clients, children with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.

Councilman Shawn Pettit, D-6th, who lives across Mississippi Street from the industrial area, expressed concern over the possibility the children would leave the building and be exposed to the heavy truck traffic in the industrial area.

"We have a group home in the area and its clients walk the neighborhood all the time," he said at a workshop session.

Pettit said he'd like the option to evaluate the program in six months.

McNeill said clients typically receive one-on-one attention, and there is a front-desk person as well by the door. She said some parents remain in the building during the sessions.
