| Peer tutoring continues in Lunenburg (Sentinel & Enterprise) Posted: 21 Mar 2010 03:50 AM PDT LUNENBURG -- Lunenburg High School is proud to announce the continuation of its Peer Tutor Program for semester II. On Monday, March 8, a new group of seven outstanding students attended a Peer Tutor Training Seminar and were officially inducted as new members into the program. In collaboration with Fitchburg State College, LHS has been able to establish and maintain this important program, which has become a successful addition to the academic support services available to all students at LHS. LHS Peer Tutors volunteer their time to work one-on-one with peers and in return, earn valuable community service hours. They offer a unique student perspective on learning because each tutor possesses a distinctive knowledge base, tutoring is available in a multitude of subject areas. This program gives students a wonderful opportunity to support each other and has proven to reinforce the positive social climate among students at LHS. The program is a win-win situation for all parties involved. The training seminar was presented by Tom Rousseau, assistant dean of Academic Support Services and director of the Tutor Center at FSC, who volunteers his time to share with LHS those same strategies that he uses to train tutors at FSC. Academic support is available to all students before school, during school, and after school, Monday to Thursday from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m., in all subject areas. | DOE hotlines opened for test preparation (The News-Star) Posted: 20 Mar 2010 11:31 PM PDT The Louisiana Department of Education has opened its telephone tutoring hotline to assist students and parents in preparation for the upcoming rounds of standardized tests. The hotline, which has been operational 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays before and during standardized testing, has fielded about 200 calls per day during the past two years. The assistance offered through the Tutoring Hotline is specifically centered on assisting fourth- and eighth-grade students and their families as they prepare to take LEAP. Tutors assist students in answering questions from practice books that were developed by Department of Education and distributed to schools in February. Students and families who need assistance answering the questions contained in the books may use the Tutoring Hotline as a resource. "We are very pleased to be able to provide this service to our students and their families," State Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek said . "We want our students to be comfortable and confident when test time rolls around, and practicing helps reassure them that they have the knowledge and skills to do well." The statewide assessments are based on grade-level expectations, which define the knowledge and skills students should have obtained by the end of each grade in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. "As a former educator, I realize the apprehension students and educators may feel during test time," said Keith Guice, president of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. "Our hope is that families and students will take advantage of the Tutoring Hotline and some of the other resources that are available to them as a way of relieving some of their anxiety." Among other resources offered on the Department of Education Web site are Newton's Classroom, an interactive math tutorial for student in first through eighth grades; PASS, a tool for testing knowledge in English language arts, math, science and social studies; and Reading Runway, a tutorial for pre-kindergarten through third grade that allows students to strengthen reading skills, Also on the Web site is EAGLE, a resource designed to provide teachers and administrators in third through 12th grades with access to tests based on the state's grade level expectation. The first round of standardized testing will begin March 23 when students in fourth, eighth, 10th and 11th grades take the handwritten portions of the exams. Parents and students may access the state's Tutoring Hotline toll-free by calling 1-877-453-2721. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
