Library offers free, one-one-one online tutoring

ALACHUA – Need a tutor?

Free homework help is just a click away for anyone with a library card.

Since February, patrons of the Alachua County Library District have had access to HelpNow, an online tutoring service that allows students to connect one-on-one to tutors. The service also is available to students in all other Florida counties.

For Diane Colson, Youth Services manager for the Alachua County Library District, the tutoring program is a great way for libraries to provide tutors when many lack the space or volunteers to have live tutors.

HelpNow, a program from BrainFuse, Inc., one of the nation's leading online tutoring providers, offers students from third grade all the way to high school homework help in subjects ranging from math to social studies to foreign languages.

HelpNow also helps with term papers and job assistance such as resume critiques.

The system uses an online text chat format as well as a whiteboard to help solve math problems.

"It's like having a teacher helping you on the blackboard," Colson said. "It really is amazing, and the tutors are really good."

Anyone can access tutors from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the system with other features that are available all day, such as practice tests.

E-cards are also available for anyone who might not have a library card and would like to access the program at home.

"The e-card is available to anyone in the state of Florida," Colson said. "So anyone can use it, which is wonderful for the surrounding counties."

The system is also easy to use, and the library has seen a steady increase in users since its release.

"It's really kid-friendly," Colson said, "so you don't have to learn anything new about technology.

"People are just thrilled to have this available in their homes."
