Library, tutoring center open at A&M-Central Texas
Posted On: Wednesday, Mar. 3 2010 02:08 AM
Killeen Daily Herald Students who take classes on the Texas A&M University-Central Texas North Campus will now be able to research papers and receive homework help in the campus' new library and tutoring center. A&M-Central Texas officials revealed the added services during an open house Tuesday afternoon. Mark Harris, director of library services, said university officials decided to offer the resources after receiving several requests from students and faculty members. "Students were hard-pressed to find their research," Harris said. "This will be a life saver." The North Campus Library, at 701 Whitlow Drive in Killeen, will be staffed from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and will offer reference assistance, course reserves, public access computers, a multimedia viewing room, materials checkout and return, interlibrary loan services and die cut services. Students also will have access to more than 100,000 books, multimedia and journal titles, 186 electronic databases, 28,000 full text e-books and 54,000 full text e-journals. The Tutoring Center, housed within the library, will allow students to receive help with classes, upcoming tests and homework. The library does not house books outside the electronic database but students can request books to be delivered to the campus within 24 hours, Harris said. Next semester he hopes to bring in more computers and a series of book collections. The North Campus Library is offered in addition to the A&M-Central Texas Main Library, located within the Hobby Memorial Library on the Central Texas College campus. The new library and tutoring center represents one of many expanding resources for the new university. Tarleton State University-Central Texas officially transitioned into A&M-Central Texas in May. The university has increased its enrollment in the past year with 2,553 enrolled this spring compared to 1,897 students the year before. The growing university offers classes at its main campus on Clear Creek Road, in classrooms at Fort Hood and on its North Campus in the old Fairway Middle School building in Killeen. | Local tutoring company going national (WAFF 48 News Huntsville) Posted: 02 Mar 2010 07:38 PM PST Posted by Sam McAdams - email HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A local tutoring company is preparing to go national. 23-year-old Glenn Clayton started Appleton Learning five years ago out of a college dorm room at UA-Huntsville. It has grown to become one of the largest tutoring and test prep services in the state. Clayton said Appleton is now to the point where it stands on its own. "People have seen the effects of what we do, that the programs we have done in the schools, the thousands of kids that we work with, we've really made a reputation for the quality of services that we offer and the difference that we are making in the community," Clayton said. He's making plans to open up a franchise in Birmingham, Denver, Houston and Nashville. ©2010 WAFF. All rights reserved. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
