District Faces $119 Million Budget Gap

Clayton County schools are facing a $119 million budget shortfall over the next two years. The district is considering deep cuts that would affect after-school tutoring programs and bus service to certain magnet schools.

The district currently provides door-to-door bus service for students who attend special programs like the Fine Arts Magnet School at Mt. Zion high school. The proposal would eliminate home pick-up and require parents to bring their children to a central location for shuttle service.

"Parents of those children would be asked to bring the students to a central shuttle site and they'd be taken to locations and brought back for parents to pick them up at that point," said Charles White, a spokesman for Clayton County schools.

"It isn't so much a cut in service but a realignment of the programs so transportation is not needed," he said. But he added, "if you want to call it a cut, call it a cut."

White said that measure would save the district more than $3 million over the next three years. It would be one of the numerous the numerous cuts the district would make to save a total of $84 million next year.

Some parents complain that they would not be able to drop off their children at those sites. CBS Atlanta asked White would provisions be made to help them.

White said, "I don't have an answer for them right now. It will have to be considered as we go forward."

The school district is also considering re-organizing a tutoring program aimed at helping students with standardized tests. The district would hold tutoring sessions during school hours, eliminating after-school and Saturday tutoring.

But some parents complained the cuts would not be fair.

"If the kids are getting it now, don't take it away from them," said Juanita Wyche, whose child attends after-school program.

LAUREL, MS. (WDAM) - A Jones County Junior College student is using a community service project to help local elementary students perform better in school.

Kraig Simpson is a sophomore Honors College student at JCJC. Earlier this year he established a tutoring program at three Jones County schools.

On Tuesdays, Simpson and other students help fifth graders improve their reading skills. Simpson also received two prestigious scholarships to advance his education at Mississippi State partly because of the tutoring initiative.

Simpson says, "We are here to help them on an academic standpoint. To help them learn better techniques of reading, writing, learning. But also to help them grow on a personal level, and help them understand the importance of education."

Simpson's tutoring program takes place at West Jones, Glade, and South Jones Elementary Schools.
