Spring semester is traditionally the time when students get serious about their grades. The Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave. and the PLS Virtual Library, www.mylibrary2go.com, will offer tutoring services and academic support for students at all levels. The Tuesday Tutor Program, sponsored by Crossroads Youth and Family Services, Inc., is in its fifth year of service at the library, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays. Students in grades 6-12 can come to the library for one-on-one help in most subjects. Tutors, who are University of Oklahoma students, are proficient in one or more academic subjects. Tutors have also participated in a tutoring orientation and undergone an extensive background check. Elizabeth Windes, a retired teacher, is coordinator of the program. "The Tuesday Tutor Program has been in the Norman Public Schools for more than 16 years, offering tutoring after school in the school library media centers," Windes said. "Having tutors at the Norman Public Library allows us to reach more students because the library is open later. The library also serves students from other communities, private schools and students who are homeschooled. All are welcome to meet with a Tuesday Tutor." The Pioneer Library System's online Virtual Library offers free, live, online tutoring sessions for students in grades 3-12. Tutoring in the core subjects of math, science, social studies and language arts is available 2 to11 p.m. daily, with extra Wednesday hours, 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brainfuse tutoring is free for students who log on to the system via a library computer or who access it from home by logging in with their library card number. Students also have the option of creating their own Brainfuse account with a Username and Password to keep track of their sessions and their progress. The Brainfuse tutoring program offers online Homework Help, assistance with understanding an academic concept in a skill building section, a 24-hour writing lab, a test center, a 24/7 help desk, a foreign language lab and even an adult learning center. Brainfuse is only one of the services available to students through the MyLibrary2Go web portal. Dozens of online data bases and research resources are organized by topic with special sections for small business owners, Spanish speakers and educators. For more information about these programs or any of the services offered at the Norman Public Library, visit the library, call 701-2620, or log on to www.justsoyouknow.us/norman.
